Iggy Azalea is a young hip hop artist whose recent music videos have caught the attention of bloggers and interweb critics for her parodies of popular films including Clueless ("Fancy"), Showgirls, and Blade Runner. Anytime I hear that an artist is channeling Blade Runner into their work, I am intrigued. Upon checking out the music video for the song "Change Your Life" to see how Iggy blended these two seemingly disparate films into a concept video for a hip hop song, I found myself very pleasantly surprised with the styling of Iggy's character. My focus here is on the makeup Iggy wore in the video-- six looks in all.
Iggy's makeup artist for this video is Priscilla Ono which explains why the looks are so clean and bold. I am a fan of Ono's work and appreciate her attention to eyebrows!
For the daytime scenes, Iggy has golden bronze cheeks and a strong lip in iconic reds and pinks paired with a neutral eye or heavy winged cat eye. Overall, I think the adventurous fashion Iggy wears in this video warrants the visual competition displayed in her iconic makeup.
Highlighting and contouring is also a major feature of the makeup looks in this video. Under the bright lights of Las Vegas at night, the angles of Iggy's face are made more prominent through the use of contouring in warm bronze hues with the high points of her face highlighted to catch the colorful neon lights. Especially notable in the night scenes, the effect of this makeup literally paints Iggy's face with the colors of the neon lights reflected on her skin.
The pièce de résistance of the makeup looks is definitely Iggy's showgirl look complete with a graphic cut crease using rhinestones to highlight the contour of her brow bone (orbicularis oculi). I know many beauty bloggers have completed tutorials on how to achieve this look and it is understandable why: this glamorous makeup is deceptively simple. Warm neutral tones on the lid with a muted pink lip accompany the lashes and rhinestone-encrusted eyes. I've collected a number of products below that anyone could use to recreate this look with some of the specific products featured in the video or identified by Iggy herself including hairspray and a spoolie brush to tame errant brow hairs.
Products (L-R): MAC Studio Finish Concealer, Barry M Lash Vegas mascara, Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow, Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner, MAC Eye Brows automatic pencil liner, Redken Fashion Work 12 hairspray, Sigma angle liner brush and spoolie brush, rhinestones (art supply), Duo adhesive for strip lashes in "Clear/White", Lime Crime Velvetine in "Pink Velvet", MAC lipstick in "Ruby Woo", MAC Pro Longwear bronzer in "Nude on Board (LE, Hey Sailor! collection), NARS Illuminator in "Copacabana".
